NHS Staffordshire & Stoke-on-Trent ICS Achieves One Planet Standard for Sustainability Leadership

NHS Staffordshire & Stoke-on-Trent Integrated Care System (SSoT ICS) earned the One Planet Standard, embedding climate and sustainability actions into day-to-day operations and advancing system-wide benefits across the NHS and partners.

At a glance

  • Organisation: NHS Staffordshire & Stoke-on-Trent Integrated Care System (SSoT ICS),
  • Standard: One Planet Standard (independently assessed & certified),
  • Focus: Embedding climate & sustainability into business-as-usual; measurable, system-wide benefits.

Why did you wish to achieve the One Planet Standard

SSoT ICS wished to have an independent assessment and certification that highlights achievements to date, embeds awareness of environmental sustainability, and fosters a culture of continuous improvement. It is recognised by a wide range of organisations (including the DVLA and local authorities such as Swansea Council, Bronze Certification), which supports promotion and shared learning across the NHS, local authorities, and other sectors.

The Approach to achieving the Standard

The process was straightforward: an online self-assessment tool was used to compile evidence of commitment to climate/sustainability goals and the existence of a detailed strategy. Guidance and feedback were provided by the assessor. The final stage involved a short interview between the assessor and the Chief Executive Officer of the SSoT Integrated Care Board (ICB) to establish leadership understanding and commitment.

The Impact / Benefits of working with the One Planet Standard

  • Delivery against NHS England and SSoT ICS strategic objectives and targets for the Climate Change / Green Agenda in line with the Health and Care Act 2022.
  • Demonstrates commitment to embed climate change and sustainability impact measures within business-as-usual operations and gain recognition through wider system partners and stakeholders outside of the NHS.
  • Highlights broader system benefits to senior leadership in areas not routinely considered, e.g. financial savings associated with carbon reductions in the supply chain; cost avoidance (adaptation, digital and service transformation); improved health and wellbeing outcomes; and reduced non-clinical and clinical waste.

The Assessment Feedback

The assessment helped highlight areas for improvement and refinement, such as identifying where additional information should be reported and included within the system dashboard.

Would you recommend Assessment Services as an assessment body?

Yes. The process was straightforward and helpful in gaining assurance that the ICS’s approach to reducing greenhouse gas emissions across the integrated care system is comprehensive.
